The Murenc farm is located in the eastern hills, more precisely in the village of Snežatno. The farm has a long tradition of fruit growing and viticulture. Vineyards (4 hectares) are arranged in different locations, at an altitude of 50 to 200 meters. In the vineyards, they use exclusively ecological agents (copper, sulfur) and fertilizers of animal and plant origin. Most of the work on the farm is done manually (mowing, weeding, cutting shoots, harvesting), only certain tasks are carried out with a tractor.
Grape harvesting begins in early September and can last until the end of the month, depending on the harvest and weather conditions. After harvesting, the grapes are stalked and macerated in 1000-liter containers. Different grape varieties macerate for different lengths of time to achieve the best flavors and aromas. After maceration, the grapes are gently squeezed (0.8–1 bar). Fermentation usually begins during maceration or is completed in barrels. They use exclusively refurbished or used oak barrels so that the wood does not prevail over the wine. During the maturation of the wine, they are regularly stirred to preserve fruitiness and color.
The philosophy of the farm is based on the belief that viticulture begins in the vineyard, and wine is the result of all the effort and cooperation with nature. The farm has a long tradition of organic viticulture and believes that certifications are not a key factor in producing honest, natural wine.
Grape varieties: Malvasia, Tokaj, Rebula, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Merlot
Alojz Murenc – A farmer who drives the farm forward.
In his youth, he and his wife Erika devoted themselves mainly to fruit growing, and viticulture was only part of the activity. Manufacturing, buying and selling have always been part of his business world. Today, he is a pillar of the family and, in addition to his work, supports and helps his sons on their winemaking journey. In addition to a great passion for wine, as evidenced by the sommelier course, she devotes herself to wines produced in a natural way with natural spontaneous fermentation.
Alian Murenc – Initiator of the farm’s orientation towards viticulture.
He has always been interested in working in the vineyard. His passion for nature and admiration for how you can bring a plant to the desired results with a good approach are the foundation of his everyday life. He feels alive and free in the vineyard, and that’s how he perceives his work. He likes to combine tradition and innovation. In particular, it experiments with new techniques and a sustainable approach to the production and processing of grapes. In his work, you can see his love for the earth and respect for nature, because in every step you can feel the desire to achieve the best results with minimal interventions.
Tai Murenc – A brother who is happy to participate in this wine story.
It is nice to see that the tradition of viticulture in Goriška Brda is passed down from generation to generation. The interest of young people in this work is inspiring. Tradition and innovation are intertwined here, especially with brothers who want to develop their own wine story. The division of labor is also interesting, as Tai is more inclined to work in the cellar – the entire process of processing grapes, from fermentation and tasting control to blending and bottling.
Although everyone sees themselves in their own work, everyone is for everyone – and this is what gives this story a special charm, because the essence can only be achieved by working together.
